TL;DR
Manager, Mobile Software Engineering (iOS/Android): Leading a mobile engineering team building, testing, and delivering features for NPR’s flagship mobile applications with an accent on people leadership, technical quality, and cross-functional Agile delivery. Focus on architecting mobile features, improving developer experience through automation, and coordinating production incident response for large-scale applications.
Location: Remote-permitted within the United States, with options for onsite work at an facility or a combination of remote and onsite work. The role is based out of the Washington, D.C. office, and occasional travel may be required.
Salary: $165,000–$175,000 USD annually, plus benefits.

What you will do
- Manage, mentor, and coach mobile software engineers, supporting career growth, professional development, and psychological safety.
- Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training for engineering staff.
- Partner with product, design, data, and editorial stakeholders to define priorities and deliver mobile features.
- Lead technical planning, project scoping, Agile ceremonies, and software delivery.
- Review software designs and code to maintain code health, architectural integrity, and security standards.
- Improve engineering workflows, automate developer experience, and coordinate responses to production incidents and external contributors.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience managing, mentoring, or leading mobile software engineers in an Agile organization.
- Previous individual-contributor experience engineering, testing, and shipping robust code for a large-scale mobile application.
- Hands-on proficiency with Swift or Objective-C for iOS, or Kotlin or Java for Android.
- Working knowledge of native mobile release infrastructure, including App Store Connect, provisioning profiles, Google Play Console, or staged rollouts.
- Experience with Git and cross-functional Agile/Scrum product teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Experience managing internal employees and external agency vendors or contractors.
- Experience with native mobile media streaming frameworks such as AVKit, AVFoundation, Media3, or ExoPlayer.
- Familiarity with SwiftUI, Combine, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, MVVM, CarPlay, or Android Auto.
