Engineering Lead (Cryptography Lab)

Location: Leeds, Edinburgh, or Bristol, UK; hybrid working with at least two days per week or 40% of working time at an office site

What you will do

• Lead the engineering capability for Key Management services within the Cryptography Lab.
• Own end-to-end operational health, reliability, service resilience, and continuous improvement.
• Direct and develop engineering teams responsible for designing, building, and operating cryptographic services.
• Evolve enterprise key management services using crypto-agility principles and modern DevOps practices.
• Partner with Product Owners, Risk, Compliance, and Audit stakeholders on prioritisation, trade-offs, controls, and regulatory expectations.
• Improve engineering maturity, operability, maintainability, delivery predictability, and operational excellence.

Requirements

• Senior engineering leadership experience with accountability for delivery and operational outcomes.
• Strong understanding of Key Management concepts, cryptographic controls, and Key Management operating models.
• Experience leading, coaching, and performance-managing engineering teams.
• Experience applying modern engineering practices in high-risk, regulated environments.
• Experience ensuring services meet security, regulatory, and audit requirements through embedded controls.
• Strong stakeholder management skills across engineering, risk, and business teams.

Nice to have

• Experience delivering scalable, resilient, and highly available platforms across their full lifecycle.
• Background in financial services, financial markets, or another regulated environment.
• Knowledge of cryptographic ceremonies, HSM lifecycle management, or related operational practices.
• Experience driving engineering maturity, reliability, and operational excellence at scale.
