What you will do

• Develop hybrid models combining physics-based knowledge with AI techniques to predict vessel fuel consumption.
• Design and validate data-driven biofouling detection and monitoring methods for condition-based maintenance.
• Integrate environmental factors like waves, wind, and currents into predictive performance models.
• Collaborate with academic and industrial partners to validate methods on real-world datasets.
• Contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, and project deliverables.
• Support the supervision of MSc and PhD students in related research areas.

Requirements

• PhD (or near completion) in maritime engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field.
• Expertise in maritime energy systems, data-driven modelling, and hybrid physics–AI approaches.
• Solid background in modelling of dynamic systems and/or machine learning for engineering applications.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Willingness and ability to relocate to the Netherlands.

Nice to have

• Experience with data analysis, simulation tools, or digital twins.
