TL;DR

Journals Publisher (Science & Technology, Medicine, HSS): Manage streamlined portfolio of academic journals in China with an accent on strategic development, growth, and partnerships. Focus on cultivating relationships with Chinese academia, recruiting editors, monitoring research trends, and collaborating with global teams.

Location: Hybrid in Beijing (Cultural Square, Haidian) or Shanghai (Shui on Plaza, Huang Pu) offices, 3+ days per week in office, must live within commutable distance and have right to work in China. No relocation support.

What you will do

  • Manage journal portfolio, create strategic development plans, and deliver growth targets including P&L oversight.
  • Build partnerships with Chinese universities, societies, and research centers through in-person visits and events.
  • Recruit and support Chinese editors and editorial boards, represent at conferences, and host workshops.
  • Monitor Chinese research trends, funding, and policies to identify opportunities and provide insights to global teams.
  • Collaborate across cultures and time zones, translating strategies between local and international contexts.

Requirements

  • Fluency in Mandarin and English (written and spoken).
  • Degree in relevant field; must have right to work in China.
  • Experience in scholarly journals management, strategic development, and P&L responsibility.
  • Experience with external partners, editors recruitment, market analysis, and competitive intelligence.
  • Availability for frequent travel within China; flexibility for global time zones.
  • Cultural fluency in Chinese academia and excellent relationship-building skills.

  • Track record of partnerships in China.
  • Experience in cross-cultural global organizations.
  • Understanding of China's research funding and priorities.
  • Existing networks in Chinese academic communities.
