What you will do
- Lead laboratory-based experimental work on interstellar ice analogues, including sample preparation and analysis.
- Develop, refine, and optimize experimental apparatus and laboratory methods to advance research objectives.
- Analyze high-resolution mid-infrared spectra and integrate data into the interpretation of JWST ice observations.
- Generate comprehensive spectral libraries and derive accurate optical constants.
- Prepare and publish high-quality research outputs in leading international journals.
- Disseminate findings at national and international conferences and group seminars.
Requirements
- PhD in Experimental Physics, Physical Chemistry, Laboratory Astrochemistry, or a closely related field.
- Experience with at least two of the following: ultra-high vacuum, cryogenics, infrared spectroscopy, thin-film deposition, or ice aerosols.
- Strong analytical skills in spectroscopic dataset analysis, including band-profile analysis and deconvolution.
- Proficiency in data-analysis tools such as Python or Origin.
- A developing track record of peer-reviewed publications in international journals.
- Must be able to work on site in Milton Keynes each day to carry out experimental duties.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of ice chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, or scattering models (Mie, Rayleigh, etc.).
- Familiarity with JWST ice data or observational ice spectra interpretation.
- Experience contributing to open source scientific tools or spectral databases.
- Expertise in acoustic levitation or aerosol physics.
