TL;DR

Post Doctoral Research Associate (Laboratory Astrochemistry): Investigating the chemical and physical properties of interstellar ices by integrating laboratory techniques with JWST observations with an accent on spectral library generation and optical constants. Focus on developing acoustic-levitation systems to study ice aggregates and analyzing high-resolution mid-infrared spectra.

Location: Must work onsite in Milton Keynes each day

Salary: £38,784 to £41,064

Company

hirify.global is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining research excellence with a mission to widen access to higher education.

What you will do

  • Lead laboratory-based experimental work on interstellar ice analogues, including sample preparation and analysis.
  • Develop, refine, and optimize experimental apparatus and laboratory methods to advance research objectives.
  • Analyze high-resolution mid-infrared spectra and integrate data into the interpretation of JWST ice observations.
  • Generate comprehensive spectral libraries and derive accurate optical constants.
  • Prepare and publish high-quality research outputs in leading international journals.
  • Disseminate findings at national and international conferences and group seminars.

Requirements

  • PhD in Experimental Physics, Physical Chemistry, Laboratory Astrochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with at least two of the following: ultra-high vacuum, cryogenics, infrared spectroscopy, thin-film deposition, or ice aerosols.
  • Strong analytical skills in spectroscopic dataset analysis, including band-profile analysis and deconvolution.
  • Proficiency in data-analysis tools such as Python or Origin.
  • A developing track record of peer-reviewed publications in international journals.
  • Must be able to work on site in Milton Keynes each day to carry out experimental duties.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of ice chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, or scattering models (Mie, Rayleigh, etc.).
  • Familiarity with JWST ice data or observational ice spectra interpretation.
  • Experience contributing to open source scientific tools or spectral databases.
  • Expertise in acoustic levitation or aerosol physics.

Culture & Benefits

  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and connections to external research facilities.
  • Interdisciplinary and collaborative environment across Physics and Astronomy disciplines.
  • Support for professional growth through staff development events and courses.
  • Possibility of flexible working arrangements for non-laboratory tasks.

Hiring process

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for onsite interviews in Milton Keynes on June 17th or 18th.
