Archaeology Field Technician (Gulf Coast)

Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana / Houston, Texas; fieldwork throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Remote designation with extensive outdoor, travel-based fieldwork, including overnight travel and possible long-term remote camping.

Salary: $20–25 per hour, based on experience. Per diem is generally at least $50 per day; lodging is covered separately.

What you will do

• Conduct archaeological pedestrian surveys, subsurface testing, excavations, and artifact identification.
• Collect archaeological data using GPS, photographs, site forms, site sketches, and artifact sketches.
• Measure and fully record artifacts while preparing detailed, high-quality field notes.
• Work independently or as part of a project team across demanding field environments.
• Travel by day and overnight as needed to support field projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• At least six months of archaeological field or field school experience, including survey and excavation.
• Ability to hike up to 5–10 miles per day and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate GPS units and navigate with maps, aerial photography, and a compass.
• Strong communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and note-taking skills.
• COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, subject to qualifying medical or religious accommodations; drug and alcohol testing and fit-for-work testing are required.

Culture & Benefits

• Temporary, part-time, non-exempt hourly position with approximately 45–50 hours per week.
• Per diem is provided based on the fieldwork location, and hotel or lodging is covered separately.
• Some projects may involve long-term remote camping.
• Post-field office work may be available at the discretion of the Project Field Director or Principal Investigator.
