TL;DR

Genealogy Research Expert: Review user questions and produce structured research reports covering sources, analysis, conclusions, and next steps with an accent on record availability across geographies and time periods. Focus on recommending tailored sources, explaining absences of records, and guiding users from beginners to experts.

Location: Asynchronous remote. This role is not eligible for U.S. immigration sponsorship.

What you will do

• Review incoming user research questions and assess actual needs versus stated asks.
• Produce structured reports including research question, sources consulted, analysis, conclusions, next steps, and citations.
• Explain record existence for specific periods, geographies, or types and reasons for unavailability.
• Recommend tailored sources, databases, archives, or strategies per user situation.
• Flag questions needing more context and maintain warm, accessible tone for all user levels.

Requirements

• Hands-on genealogical research experience across multiple record types like vital, census, immigration, probate, military, church.
• Familiarity with U.S. records essential; international (European, UK, Latin American) a strong plus.
• Comfort explaining record absences and Genealogical Proof Standard or equivalent practices.
• Strong written communication to explain complex research to non-experts.
• Experience with major platforms like Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast.
• B.A. in Family History & Genealogy or 1-2 years research experience including paleography and source analysis; at least 1 year compiling historical records.
• Ability to automate tasks with regex and scripting; strong problem-solving and team skills.
