I plan to build a singelplayer dark fantasy third-person RPG with ground & flight combat – a spiritual successor of Drakan. This is a long-term attempt to create a AA or high quality indie game. Goal is to build a prototype and a gameplay trailer this year to generate traction and attract funding. I personally finance the development during the prototype phase while working full-time and contributing to game and art design, as well as some animations
Your focus: gameplay programming foundation, system architecture and ultimately, delivering a polished experience in Unreal Engine 5. Development will work on Layered Fidelity base, prioritizing progressive refinement over a rushed, finished product. Sustainable pace, no crunch, high creative influence. Art assets, character models, rigging, animations and sound are handled by me or someone else. Finishing the "Make-or-Break-Core" is the first important task. Therefore: The plan involves several months of preparation and sandbox development to build a small prototype of the most important core mechanics like movment and mounting system between dragon and character. Then iteration and improvement. (Walk → Mount → Fly → Land)
I'm not looking for just a short contract – I'm searching for someone who sees real potential, wants to co-build the game long-term, shows strong personal initiative and motivation, and could become co-founder if everything works out. I will later search for another developer who can work part-time on other features. Im also in contact with an original Drakan developer - he warns about the amount of work but can also give advices
🚀 Responsibilities
• Build a small core version of flight and ground machenics as well as seamless Mount
• Iterate third-person character/dragon animations
• Core combat & interactions (jumps, dodges, attacks, charged attacks, long distance attack)
• Enemy behaviors & feedback (basic AI, hit reactions, health/damage)
• Simple inventory, pick-up/drop
• Environment interactions (e.g. traps, triggers)
📚 Required
• Solid hands-on experience with Unreal Engine 4/5 (Blueprints and/or C++)
• Previous work on third-person action, combat systems, or RPG-lite mechanics (indie / AA / AAA welcome)
• Experiance with mountsystem and ideally with dragon mechanics
• Sense for timing, feedback, responsiveness
• Portfolio with videos/demos (especially movement or combat gameplay) – required for consideration
👍 Nice to Have
• You have played Drakan as well
• Shares the same taste or style in video games (dark fantasy/horror tone)
• Have worked on a dragon game previosly
• Good connections in the dev community
• Comfortable communicating in English or Russian
• Experience with Enhanced Input, Behavior Trees, etc.
• Lives in moskau (talented person working remote is also fine)
