TL;DR

Technical Artist (Game Development): Building and optimizing game art pipelines and visual experiences with an accent on lighting, materials, and shader creation within a custom engine. Focus on enhancing art workflows, managing GPU performance, and prototyping art content for new game experiences.

Location: Hybrid (3 days a week in studio in Toronto, ON, Canada) or onsite

Salary: CAD 95,000–120,000 (Senior) or CAD 110,000–150,000 (Specialist) per year

What you will do

  • Partner with other discipline leads to establish asset naming conventions and directory structures for projects.
  • Facilitate or directly contribute to rapid prototyping of art content (assets, VFX) for early testing.
  • Collaborate with product owners, discipline leads, and production to ensure efficient and effective workflows.
  • Own shader creation and the shader library for projects, guiding best practices.
  • Manage GPU performance for the game, partnering with Graphics and Art teams to hit target framerates.
  • Be flexible and nimble to take on unique tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of game industry experience on console, mobile, handheld, and/or PC platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Graphic Art, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Solid fundamentals in Composition, Light & Color, and Perspective.
  • Expertise in 3D Studio Max or Maya and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Expertise in shader creation (node-based, GLSL) and advanced lighting techniques (baked GI, deferred).
  • Production experience working in Unreal Engine, Unity, or other AAA engines.
  • Production experience with scripting (node or text-based).
  • Prior Lead or Sub-Lead experience on mid-sized or large console/PC/Handheld/VR or AR development projects.

Nice to have

  • Film or television industry experience.
  • Experience with Adobe Substance Designer or similar.
  • Experience with physically-based rendering.
  • Expertise in modeling, texturing, character, environment, concept, or illustration.
