Software Engineer (Java Generalist)

TL;DR

Principal Java Systems Engineer: Building and optimizing high-performance, publicly visible immutable ledgers with an accent on inventing new protocols, data structures, and algorithms for low-latency systems. Focus on tuning memory and performance to the nanosecond, and ensuring correctness of mission-critical financial software.

Location: Remote. Must be based in the US or be happy to overlap with EST if based in Europe.

Salary: $160,000–$200,000

What you will do

• Invent new protocols, data structures, and algorithms to solve novel problems.
• Design and write high-throughput Java systems from scratch, optimizing memory and performance.
• Build core infrastructure, including parsers, interpreters, and performance profilers.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers, making architectural decisions for a global ledger.
• Switch between high-level system design and single-instruction-level optimization.
• Build rigorous harnesses and tests for mission-critical financial software.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Deep understanding of the JVM, including memory models, threading, GC behavior, and performance profiling.
• Experience with parsers, interpreters, compilers, or other language tooling.
• Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and high-performance code.
• Ability to deliver a high-performance server from scratch using just the JDK and an IDE.
• Proficiency with JMH, PBJ, async-profiler, JFR, YourKit, or similar performance tools.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent deep industry experience.

Nice to have

• Experience in distributed systems or blockchain technology.
• Knowledge of cryptographic primitives.
• Familiarity with Web3 tools, smart contract platforms (EVM), or high-frequency trading (HFT) systems.
