Principal Software Engineer (AI)

TL;DR

Principal Software Engineer (AI): Designing, building, and evolving large-scale distributed systems for Bing’s web data platform with an accent on processing billions of documents per day with low latency and high reliability. Focus on microservices architecture, solving complex concurrency challenges, and ensuring system reliability under heavy traffic for AI-driven experiences.

Location: Onsite in Beijing, China. Expected to work from the office at least four days per week starting January 26, 2026.

What you will do

• Design and architect large-scale distributed pipelines for scalability, robustness, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Implement new features and system improvements in highly distributed, parallelized environments, measuring impact with data.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive test coverage, including unit, integration, and performance tests.
• Debug, triage, and mitigate issues in live production environments handling massive data flows.
• Continuously improve system architecture, proposing and driving enhancements based on best practices and emerging technologies.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, PMs, and partner teams to align technical execution with business objectives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience.
• Proficiency in coding with C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Solid foundation in distributed systems, concurrency, networking, and system design.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Fluency in English (spoken and written).
• Must be based within a 25-mile commute of a Microsoft office in China (required from January 26, 2026, to work from office at least four days per week).

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor’s Degree AND 12+ years experience.
