Backend Engineer (Kotlin)

TL;DR

Backend Engineer (Kotlin): Contributing to building and optimizing high-performance backend services for an energy grid platform with an accent on rapid iteration, AI-assisted development, and integration with a modern event-driven architecture. Focus on 0→1 experimentation with new product surfaces, solving complex data model and API design challenges, and ensuring alignment across engineering teams.

Location: Remote distributed workplace with teammates based in Europe and North America.

What you will do

• Contribute to Kotlin-based microservices development, ensuring high performance, clarity, and reliability.
• Collaborate with product and design to understand user needs and rapidly validate ideas through prototypes and experiments.
• Build new features for the Reach product area using modern tools such as Supabase, PostgreSQL, and AI-assisted frameworks.
• Contribute to the design and improvement of APIs, data models, and service interactions across Kotlin services and new serverless components.
• Partner with other product teams to ensure smooth integration with event-driven architecture and Kafka streams.
• Partner with infrastructure engineers to enhance reliability, observability, and security across AWS, EKS, Terraform, and Datadog.

Requirements

• 2-4 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience with Kotlin or Java and modern backend development patterns.
• Experience with event-driven or service-oriented backends.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.
• Comfortable working with modern developer platforms such as Supabase or Vercel.
• Demonstrated ability to be productive and engaged in a remote distributed team environment across multiple time zones.

Nice to have

• Experience with energy markets, grid operations, or Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
• Experience with Kafka or similar streaming systems.
• Experience using or building AI-assisted developer tools (Langsmith, prompt pipelines).
• Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS preferred) and containerized runtimes (Kubernetes/EKS).
