Staff Software Engineer, Backend (PHP/Go)

Location: Remote within Bogotá, Colombia

Base salary: $90,000–$100,000 USD per year, plus a discretionary bonus of up to 15% of base salary.

What you will do

• Own and evolve the backend service storing user progress, guides, and survey data, with approximately 80% backend and 20% frontend work.
• Turn ambiguous product ideas into designs, write technical design documents, explain trade-offs, and align with product, design, mobile, web capture, data management, and infrastructure teams.
• Deliver approved projects end to end across infrastructure, backend services, the JavaScript guides snippet, and the React-based editor.
• Participate in on-call rotation, troubleshoot client and server issues, support Customer Support, and occasionally join customer calls.
• Mentor engineers, improve code review and engineering workflows, run proofs of concept, and contribute to company-wide initiatives.
• Use AI tools for design, coding, debugging, testing, and code review while helping shape AI-driven customer features such as content generation and MCP servers.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating complex backend systems in production from architecture through delivery; PHP or Go is preferred, while Java and other backend languages are also accepted.
• Ability to work comfortably across multiple programming languages.
• Experience writing technical design documents, leading architecture decisions, explaining alternatives, and mentoring engineers.
• Experience shipping frontend work in JavaScript, ideally with React.
• Fluent English for daily collaboration with US-based teams, including technical discussions and documentation.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience migrating a legacy service to a new technology stack.
• Experience building in-app guidance or survey products.
• Experience with real-time, client-side experiences.
