Electrical Hardware Engineer I (Avionics)

Location: Hybrid, based in Pittsburgh, PA, United States. Travel up to 10%, including possible overnight travel to domestic and international launch sites, customer facilities, and NASA/government centers.

What you will do

• Design PCBs for primary and secondary spacecraft avionics systems.
• Perform trade studies and select components for engineering and flight avionics units.
• Develop and execute component-, board-, and system-level test procedures for fabricated PCBs and integrated avionics systems.
• Participate in environmental, qualification, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
• Program embedded systems, FPGAs, microcontrollers, processors, graphic processors, or similar systems.
• Implement the systems engineering development cycle, report progress to the Avionics Lead, and write and present technical reports.

Requirements

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
• 0–2 years of experience in electronics hardware development.
• Proficiency in schematic and board design using Altium, Eagle, OrCAD, or similar software.
• Experience using standard electrical laboratory equipment, including power supplies, electronic loads, multimeters, and oscilloscopes, to execute test procedures for assembled PCBs or integrated systems.
• Must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), and eligible to obtain required export authorizations under ITAR/EAR.
• Ability to lift, move, or carry equipment weighing up to 10 pounds.

Nice to have

• Experience designing computing, signal-conditioning, control, filtering, data-acquisition, and command-and-data-handling electronics.
• Experience writing PCBA and integrated-system test plans and procedures for bring-up, design verification, qualification, and acceptance testing.
• Experience developing Python test scripts to automate PCBA or integrated-system testing.
• Experience performing electrical and avionics architecture, component, and part trade studies.
• Experience with PCBA inspection and rework to IPC-A-610 Class 3 requirements.
• Systems engineering experience involving requirements, risks, and integration flow.
• Experience programming embedded systems, FPGAs, microcontrollers, processors, graphic processors, or similar systems.
• Familiarity with NASA-STD 4001, NASA-STD 4003, or similar standards.
• Experience with digital, analog, and signal-conditioning circuit design and MIL-STD-461 testing or similar.
