Phonetician / Linguist (Spanish-US)

What you will do

• Conduct phonological and phonetic analysis of American Spanish, documenting prosody, stress, tone, coarticulation, and dialect variation.
• Define phoneme inventories, map them to IPA and TTS conventions, and produce language profiles for model training and evaluation.
• Build and maintain pronunciation lexicons, G2P rules, exceptions, and TTS text-normalization resources.
• Audit corpora, select audio references, annotate data, design evaluation protocols, and analyze pronunciation and synthesis errors.
• Review machine-generated G2P outputs and collaborate with TTS engineers, data scientists, ML researchers, native-speaker reviewers, and annotation pipelines.
• Integrate linguistic artefacts into synthesis pipelines and contribute to documentation and research discussions.

Requirements

• M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Linguistics, Phonetics, Computational Linguistics, or a related field.
• Experience building pronunciation lexicons or G2P systems for TTS or ASR.
• Deep knowledge of phonological theory, articulatory phonetics, and acoustic phonetics.
• Proficiency with IPA and at least one machine-readable phoneme notation system, such as X-SAMPA or ARPAbet.
• Experience with corpus annotation tools, including Praat, ELAN, or WebAnno.
• Strong analytical and documentation skills.
• Fluency in English and proficiency in at least one additional language relevant to hirify.global’s markets.
• Technical skills including Praat, ELAN, Audacity, PLS/CMUdict/SSML lexicon formats, Phonetisaurus, Sequitur or neural G2P, basic Python or shell scripting, and TTS text normalization.
