C++ Engineer (AQL Query Engine)

Location: Remote from Europe; candidates must live in and be authorized to work in Europe. Some travel may be required.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and evolve the AQL execution engine and query optimizer for document, graph, and search queries.
• Evaluate database research and turn promising ideas into production-ready features and optimizations.
• Own unit, integration, performance, and regression testing for delivered work.
• Drive projects from planning and design through implementation and delivery with the AQL, storage, search, cluster, and product teams.
• Investigate and resolve bugs and customer issues through root-cause analysis and tested fixes.
• Contribute to technical and product planning while mentoring junior developers through reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, ideally including significant work on database systems, query engines, compilers, or other performance-critical infrastructure.
• A track record of independently delivering complex technical projects from design to production.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed databases, distributed query execution, or cluster-aware query planning.
• Familiarity with graph databases and graph traversal algorithms, or full-text and vector search.
• Experience with query languages beyond SQL, including Cypher, Gremlin, or AQL.
• Database research background, such as a Master’s or PhD focused on query processing, or published work in the field.
• Experience with Linux systems programming, perf, Valgrind, sanitizers, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience working directly with customers on technical issues.
