AI Research Intern (PhD), 2027 Summer U.S.

Location: Remote in the United States; preferred co-location in Seattle or the Pacific Standard Timezone. The paid internship typically runs for 12 weeks between May/June and August/September 2027.

Salary: Zone A $59–$76/hour; Zone B $54–$69/hour; Zone C $49–$63/hour.

What you will do

• Collaborate with Research Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to design, implement, and evaluate experiments for modern ML and LLM systems.
• Curate, preprocess, and manage large-scale datasets for training and evaluation, ensuring quality, diversity, and reproducibility.
• Conduct continued training, fine-tuning, and alignment of large language models for conversational AI, summarization, generative search, and multimodal agents.
• Evaluate cutting-edge ML algorithms and analyze performance, failure modes, efficiency, and scalability.
• Contribute to internal workshops, presentations, and publications at top-tier academic venues.

Requirements

• Completed bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or a related field at any stage of doctoral studies. Degree completion date must be between September 2026 and June 2027.
• Strong foundation in AI/ML, LLMs, modeling, and/or optimization techniques.

Nice to have

• Strong understanding of algorithms and data structures.
• Proficiency in Python and ability to write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
• Experience with large-scale datasets, data preprocessing, augmentation, and scaling techniques.
• Experience with NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Hugging Face models, and applied machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Exposure to natural language processing and computer vision.
• Familiarity with current machine learning and AI research through coursework, publications, or projects.
• Publications in top-tier AI conferences or journals; a publications list may be included if applicable.
• Strong communication skills for articulating complex ideas and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
