Laboratory Expert – Physical Analysis & Failure Analysis (SiC/GaN)

Location: Catania, Italy; onsite role in Research & Development.

What you will do

• Support advanced physical analysis and failure analysis for power semiconductor devices and power modules.
• Support R&D activities for package and power module development focused on SiC and GaN technologies, from development through validation.
• Investigate root causes involving materials, assembly, interfaces, and structural issues.
• Prepare and analyze semiconductor samples through precision cutting, sectioning, lapping, polishing, metallographic cross-sections, ion milling, sputtering, and coating.
• Perform optical, digital microscopy, SEM, and FIB investigations, including defect localization and structural characterization.
• Support reliability investigations, technology characterization, laboratory methodology development, cross-functional collaboration, and mentoring of junior laboratory personnel.

Requirements

• More than 20 years of experience in semiconductor failure analysis and physical analysis laboratories.
• Technical diploma or degree in a relevant technical field.
• Extensive hands-on experience with metallographic preparation, lapping and polishing, precision cutting, ion milling, and sputtering.
• Strong experience with optical microscopy, digital microscopy, SEM analysis, and FIB analysis.
• Extensive experience with chemical and acid etching for semiconductor analysis, including resin removal, delayering, and metallization exposure.
• Deep knowledge of silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium nitride device structures.
• Strong understanding of power semiconductor packaging technologies, power module architectures, and multilayer and multi-interface structures used in power electronics packaging.
• Strong understanding of semiconductor failure mechanisms and physical analysis methodologies.
• Strong laboratory hands-on attitude, ability to independently manage complex analytical activities, technical problem-solving capability, and ability to work in cross-functional and international environments.
• Senior-level laboratory expertise with a strong practical and technical background.
