Mechanical Engineer (UAV)

Location: Torrance, California, United States

Salary: $100,000–$160,000 USD per year; base salary only, with potential equity grants as part of total compensation.

What you will do

• Own mechanical components and subsystems from conceptual design through mass production.
• Optimize hardware design for performance, high-volume manufacturability, and cost.
• Gather requirements and translate them into engineering architectures and design decisions.
• Perform design trades using 3D modeling, FEA tools, prototyping, and engineering first principles.
• Lead or participate in design reviews, create engineering drawings, and root-cause hardware and manufacturing issues.
• Work with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Flight Test, and other engineering teams on production tooling, build instructions, vendor selection, and validation testing.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 1–5 years of experience in fast-paced engineering or manufacturing environments, including internships, co-ops, or competitive project teams.
• Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to solve problems through first-principles thinking.
• Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks or NX.

Nice to have

• Experience piloting, working with, or designing UAVs, including hobby experience.
• Experience in a high-volume, cost-sensitive industry such as consumer electronics or automotive.
• Broad knowledge of manufacturing processes and their appropriate applications.
• Experience packaging and integrating PCBAs, batteries, and RF components.
• Familiarity with electrical and electromechanical components such as BLDC motors and optical sensors.
• Experience designing for harsh environments; expertise in structural, vibration, thermal, CFD, or another analysis discipline; Teamcenter or similar PLM experience; and hands-on fabrication skills including machining, welding, or CNC machining.
