Regional Research Economist (AI)

Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid policy requires staff to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office attendance.

What you will do

• Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, governments, industry, civil society, and research partners across the region.
• Advance country- and region-specific research collaborations on AI’s economic impact and contribute to the Anthropic Economic Index.
• Design empirical research and develop methodologies for studying AI’s effects on labor markets, productivity, task transformation, inequality, displacement, industry disruption, GDP, unemployment, and AI-adoption scenarios.
• Use privacy-preserving measurement systems and novel datasets to analyze AI usage, diffusion, augmentation, and automation across occupations and tasks.
• Work cross-functionally with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection.
• Communicate findings through research publications, policy briefs, presentations, and actionable recommendations for diverse stakeholders.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics.
• Strong empirical research track record, particularly combining novel data sources with economic theory or applying frontier methods in causal inference and machine learning.
• Experience working in the region and relevant relationships across it.
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis.
• Ability to lead complex research projects from conception through publication.
• Ability to communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
• Ability to build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
• Minimum education is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience; the required field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• Experience studying AI’s economic impact, including labor markets, occupational change, task-based technological transformation, large-scale data analysis, econometrics, large language models for social science, policy-relevant economic research, causal inference, macroeconomic modeling, time series forecasting, agent-based modeling, or large-scale simulation.
• Experience working with novel datasets and measurement systems.
• Comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks.
• Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
• Comfort working with AI systems and critically evaluating their capabilities and limitations.
