Senior Backend Software Engineer - Loki | NASA | Remote (Go)

Location: Remote; candidates must be in the United States or Canada.

Base compensation in the United States: USD 154,000–185,000 annually. Actual compensation varies by level, experience, and skillset; equity, bonus where applicable, and other benefits may apply.

What you will do

• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical multi-tenant distributed systems for observability.
• Deliver features from initial idea and requirements through production operations and customer feedback.
• Own system reliability, performance, availability, and operational improvements.
• Write and review code and design documents, contribute to open-source projects, and collaborate in a remote squad.
• Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and take ownership of operated services.
• Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, its customers, and the codebase of a large distributed system.

Requirements

• Strong experience with at least one programming language; Go is used, and familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages is relevant.
• Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and ideation through shipping to customers in a self-driven manner.
• Experience developing software that runs in the cloud or experience in systems engineering.
• Experience with on-call responsibilities and the DevOps model.
• Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
• Familiarity with observability systems and using metrics, logs, and traces to debug problems.
• Ability to break down complex challenges, design modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with an independent approach suited to fully remote work.
• Customer focus, pragmatism, self-direction, and a bias toward action.

Nice to have

• Experience working with Kubernetes.
• Experience with queue systems such as the Kafka protocol.
• Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call, or through hobby and homelab projects.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or willingness to learn.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code.
