Mechanical Engineer (IoT Hardware)

Location: On-site in Auckland, New Zealand; travel to suppliers in China and Thailand for 10–20% of the year, negotiable.

What you will do

• Develop robust electro-mechanical devices fitted to animals and designed to operate continuously outdoors for 6–10 years.
• Own mechanical product development from concept sketches through laboratory testing, production, and continuous product improvement.
• Design, conduct, and document verification and validation tests.
• Design and iterate complex injection-molded parts, including overmolding, and support tool commissioning.
• Design parts and assemblies for manufacture and assembly, including processes for high-volume manufacturing.
• Collaborate with external suppliers and contract manufacturers in China and Thailand to optimize designs and streamline manufacturing.

Requirements

• 1+ years of professional experience, ideally developing robust hardware products.
• Experience with highly reliable device design and robust product development.
• Exposure to the full product life cycle and understanding of outdoor hardware challenges.
• Experience with verification and validation, including designing, conducting, and documenting high-quality tests.
• Experience designing complex injection-molded parts, specifically overmolding.
• Experience setting up contract manufacturers to produce high-quality injection-molded parts and experience with tool commissioning at contract manufacturers.
• Experience designing and iterating parts and assemblies for ease of manufacture and assembly, and selecting processes for high-volume manufacturing.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D drafting, preferably SolidWorks or Onshape.
• Availability and interest in travelling for 10–20% of the year, negotiable.

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field.
