Senior Backend QA Engineer (Java, Test Automation, Payments)

Location: Hybrid work in Lisbon or Porto, Portugal. Applicants must already have the legal right to work in the European Union.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain automated backend testing frameworks for Java applications, microservices, and APIs.
• Define manual testing strategies and create test cases for backend business logic and batch processing.
• Translate payment-domain rules into executable test scenarios with Product Owners, Tech Leads, and Developers.
• Validate database integrity, complex queries, data migration, and transactional behavior using SQL.
• Integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines and promote Quality First and Shift-Left practices.
• Troubleshoot defects, analyze logs and root causes, and document findings accurately.

Requirements

• More than 6 years of professional QA experience focused on backend testing and automation.
• Hands-on experience with Java-based tools including REST Assured, JUnit, TestNG, and Cucumber.
• Strong knowledge of Java 17/21, Spring Boot, and log debugging techniques.
• Advanced SQL skills with Oracle or PostgreSQL for database validation and data migration.
• Experience with Xray or Zephyr and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitLab CI.
• Fluent English at B2/C1 level and an existing legal right to work in the European Union are required.

Nice to have

• Experience testing asynchronous architectures and messaging queues such as Kafka and RabbitMQ.
• Familiarity with Spring Batch processes.
• French language skills.
