Research Fellow, Conceptual Reasoning

Location: Default in-person work at the San Francisco office, with possible work from New York City or Washington, DC offices; remote work may be considered within the United States. A one-week in-person orientation in San Francisco is required.

Compensation: $117,000–$167,000 USD for the four-month fellowship, equivalent to $350,000–$500,000 USD annualized.

What you will do

• Identify open problems and grand societal challenges in philosophy, cognitive science, economics, policy, or law where expert judgment is important.
• Use Claude and internal tooling to evaluate and improve AI reasoning in the selected field.
• Design evaluations, benchmarks, datasets, expert rubrics, and RL environments for systematic model testing.
• Build challenging, judgment-heavy environments with other Fellows and Anthropic research teams.
• Work on a scoped research project with mentorship from Anthropic researchers.

Requirements

• PhD in philosophy, cognitive science, economics, policy, or law, either completed or in progress, or equivalent research experience.
• Hands-on experience using Claude and Claude Code in daily work.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-agency environment and deliver concrete results over several months.
• Existing full-time authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the program is required.
• Visa sponsorship is not available for this fellowship.

Nice to have

• Experience designing evaluations, benchmarks, datasets, or expert rubrics.
• Demonstrated expertise through research, scholarship, or expert-level analytical writing.
