TL;DR
Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Cancer Genomics (Cancer Genomics): Analysing genomic data and calculating prostate cancer polygenic risk scores for the GP-TEST-Pro clinical study with an accent on genotype quality control, ancestry assessment, and variant harmonisation. Focus on validating a 451-SNV risk score, evaluating genomic markers for clinically significant prostate cancer detection, and integrating rigorous genetic epidemiology methods.

Location: Oxford Road, Manchester, United Kingdom. Applicants must demonstrate the right to work in the UK; this role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

Company

hirify.global research role contributing to the multidisciplinary GP-TEST-Pro prostate cancer clinical study.

What you will do

  • Receive, securely store, and manage genomic data according to University, NHS, and study governance requirements.
  • Perform genotype and imputed-data quality control, including sample- and variant-level checks, ancestry assessment, allele harmonisation, and preparation of analysis-ready datasets.
  • Use genetic analysis tools such as PLINK/PLINK2 and imputation server outputs to process and analyse genomic data.
  • Calculate and validate a 451-SNV prostate cancer polygenic risk score using published effect sizes.
  • Evaluate additional genomic markers and polygenic risk score approaches relevant to clinically significant prostate cancer detection.

Requirements

  • PhD, or imminent PhD completion, in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, epidemiology, data science, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Hands-on experience conducting cancer genomic medicine research and analysing genetic or genomic datasets.
  • Experience cleaning, quality-controlling, and managing genotype or imputed genomic data, including pre- and post-imputation checks.
  • Experience calculating, validating, or applying polygenic risk scores with variant effect sizes and ancestry or population-structure adjustment.
  • Understanding of SNVs, alleles, imputation, linkage disequilibrium, ancestry, population structure, and principal components.
  • Right to work in the UK required; Skilled Worker visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • First- or co-author publications in cancer detection research.
  • Experience with prostate cancer genetics, cancer risk prediction, diagnostic accuracy, calibration, discrimination, or multivariable risk modelling.
  • Experience integrating genomic data with clinical, epidemiological, biomarker, or imaging data.
  • Experience working with PPI groups and co-investigators.
  • Expertise in cancer screening or early detection research.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary, inclusive research environment.
  • Generous employer pension contribution.
  • 29 days of annual leave plus bank holidays and Christmas closure.
  • Ride-to-work and electric vehicle car schemes.
  • Flexible and hybrid working information is available, subject to the role's requirements.
