Director of R&D, Applications and Testing (Biotechnology)

Location: On-site in Marlborough, Massachusetts, United States

Annual salary: $190,000–$220,000, plus eligibility for bonus or incentive pay.

What you will do

• Lead a global, multi-layered applications organization of approximately 20 associates across three geographic regions.
• Set priorities, accountability, collaboration practices, and talent development across the organization.
• Partner with customers, Field Applications, Commercial, Product Management, and R&D teams to translate customer and industry needs into technical priorities.
• Provide scientific leadership for upstream applications, with emphasis on cell culture, customer processes, and factors influencing cell growth and performance.
• Operate within stage-gate and process-oriented systems, using evidence and structured input to support decisions.
• Represent the applications organization across a highly matrixed business and build a culture of scientific rigor, customer focus, field support, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
• Progressive leadership experience in life sciences, biotechnology, bioprocessing, or a related industry.
• Experience leading global organizations across multiple regions, including people leaders or senior technical contributors.
• Direct technical experience in upstream bioprocessing, cell culture, upstream process development, upstream applications, single-use bioreactors, or related manufacturing technologies.
• Experience working with customers, commercial teams, field applications, technical support, or other customer-facing technical functions.
• Experience in matrixed organizations and structured product development, stage-gate, design control, quality management, or other regulated environments.

Nice to have

• Experience building or leading training and enablement programs for Field Applications or other customer-facing technical teams.
• Experience leading organizational change that improved customer engagement, customer learning, or adoption of new technical practices.
