Senior Software Engineer (AWS Cost Optimization)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, United States

Base salary: $180,000–$215,000 per year, plus bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Lead the programmatic management, forecasting, and reduction of cloud infrastructure spend.
• Architect and execute petabyte-scale migrations from AWS S3 to lower-cost object storage providers.
• Build centralized storage client libraries and SDKs that abstract infrastructure and reduce vendor lock-in.
• Optimize workloads migrating from AWS Lambda and ECS to EKS through benchmarking, resource right-sizing, and use of Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and Spot Instances.
• Develop cloud capacity and spend models, forecasts, budgeting, and variance analysis with Finance.
• Build Python and Go automation, Kubernetes operators, Terraform guardrails, cost telemetry, and granular chargeback reporting.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software or platform engineering experience and a track record of writing scalable, maintainable code in Python, Go, or Java.
• Deep experience with AWS S3, Backblaze, object storage APIs, large-scale data transfer pipelines, and centralized client libraries or SDKs.
• Experience building financial models, forecasting cloud spend, and planning capacity for large-scale cloud migrations.
• Expert understanding of AWS billing, pricing models, enterprise discounts, and scaling behavior.
• Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes and EKS, AWS Lambda, ECS, and Terraform.
• Excellent communication and technical leadership skills across engineering, platform, and finance teams.

Nice to have

• Experience developing Kubernetes operators or Custom Resource Definitions in Go.
• Experience with multi-petabyte data migrations and cost optimization programs.
• Experience with KubeCost, Finout, CloudHealth, or similar FinOps tools.
• FinOps Foundation Certified Practitioner or Professional certification.
• Monorepo experience and modern CI/CD practices for shared libraries.
