Design Systems Lead (AI)

Location: Hybrid in New York, NY or San Francisco, CA, with remote work available within the US. Relocation expense coverage to NYC or SF may be available.

Target base salary: $280,000–$385,000 annually for SF/NY roles, plus equity. Final compensation depends on location and level.

What you will do

• Lead and develop the design systems team by setting priorities, goals, ownership, and quality standards.
• Own the vision and direction of the design system, including components, tokens, composition, interaction patterns, and agent guidance.
• Elevate visual and interaction design across typography, hierarchy, density, motion, responsive behavior, accessibility, and non-happy-path states.
• Prototype and build in code while guiding technical architecture and implementation tradeoffs with engineering.
• Define repeatable quality evaluations based on real tasks and measure whether teams ship better work faster with less rework.
• Partner with product, engineering, and AI teams to improve the path from exploration to production and drive adoption across the company.

Requirements

• Experience leading and developing strong design or design engineering teams and delivering meaningful outcomes.
• Exceptional visual and interaction design skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to simplify complex experiences.
• Deep systems thinking and experience building design systems adopted by other teams.
• Strong technical fluency, including prototyping in code, understanding front-end architecture, and evaluating implementation tradeoffs.
• Hands-on use of AI in design and development workflows, including understanding its limitations and improving its output.
• Strong product judgment, decision-making, communication, feedback, and execution skills in ambiguous environments.

Nice to have

• Experience building agent-usable design guidance, generation workflows, or design-quality evaluations.
• Experience building developer or designer tools used in daily workflows by other teams.
• Experience leading a major design-system migration or company-wide change in how teams build.
• Experience evolving systems across platforms or connecting product and brand experiences.
• Founder or early-stage startup experience.
