Applied AI Engineer (Life Sciences)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY, with staff expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: $280,000–$320,000 USD

What you will do

• Partner with life sciences research institutions to understand scientific workflows and build production systems with their engineering teams.
• Prototype agents and integrate AI tools into day-to-day research pipelines.
• Develop reusable ecosystem infrastructure, including MCP servers for genomics platforms, literature databases, experimental repositories, and scientific instruments.
• Create scientifically grounded benchmarks and reusable agent skills for broader adoption across life sciences institutions.
• Identify deployment challenges involving heterogeneous data, auditability, and the transition from prototypes to trusted systems.
• Produce technical content and documentation that enables partners to self-serve and scale successful solutions.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience as a software engineer, forward-deployed engineer, or technical founder.
• Production experience shipping systems that real users depend on.
• Deep research experience in life sciences, biomedical research, or scientific computing.
• Experience building LLM-powered tools or applications, including prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, or evaluation frameworks.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or relevant professional experience.
• Ability to work from a San Francisco or New York City office at least 25% of the time.

Nice to have

• Technical experience in genomics, neuroscience, or drug discovery.
• Experience working closely with academic researchers.
• Experience as a technical founder or in forward-deployed engineering.
