Applied Research Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States, with hiring locations listed as New York City, NY and San Francisco, CA; collaboration during US Eastern hours is required.

What you will do

• Build the component layer around the layout-synthesis engine, including documented APIs, product-facing services, and evaluation gates.
• Turn model retraining into reproducible one-command jobs with integrated benchmarks and readable results.
• Own latency and cost budgets for learned capabilities and improve the existing architecture without unnecessary rewrites.
• Extend research into capabilities such as multi-story floor plans and real-time editing.
• Partner with infrastructure engineers on MLOps and deployment, while mentoring researchers and interns on engineering practices.
• Communicate through status updates, pull requests, and design notes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years training and shipping ML models to real users.
• End-to-end experience with data preparation, training, evaluation, serving, and product integration for at least one model.
• Fluency in Python and PyTorch; experience with TensorFlow or Keras is acceptable when prepared to move to PyTorch.
• Experience with geometric or structured data such as floor plans, CAD, BIM, graphs, or 2D and 3D geometry.
• Experience building or maintaining evaluation harnesses or benchmarks, packaging models behind APIs such as FastAPI, and owning latency and cost.
• Must be comfortable working remotely with a team on US Eastern hours. A master's degree in computer science, machine learning, or a related field, or equivalent shipped work, is required; a PhD is not required.

Nice to have

• Architecture, building, or AEC software experience.
• Experience with OR-Tools CP-SAT, optimization, generative layout models, or floor-plan generation.
• Experience with Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, Hugging Face, experiment tracking, AWS, Modal, publications, or open-source contributions.
