TL;DR
Principal Site Reliability Engineer (AWS/Terraform): Building Genomics England's organisation-wide SRE capability and leading a team that improves the reliability of healthcare software, APIs, bioinformatics pipelines, and data workflows with an accent on platform engineering, release automation, observability, and operational resilience. Focus on defining reliability standards, reducing operational toil, embedding SRE practices across product squads, and solving complex technical challenges across AWS, on-premise infrastructure, and HPC environments.

Location: London, United Kingdom, with a blended working model requiring office attendance at least twice per month; additional offices are located in Cambridge and Leeds. Up to 30 days of remote working abroad annually may be available with approval.

Salary from £107,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Build and lead an initial team of three Site Reliability Engineers.
  • Identify and prioritise reliability improvements across user-facing applications, backend APIs, bioinformatics pipelines, and data workflows.
  • Define standards, architectural patterns, tooling, and services that help engineering teams operate reliable systems.
  • Develop release automation and other capabilities that reduce operational toil and improve engineering effectiveness.
  • Partner with product squads to embed SRE principles, improve operations, and solve complex technical challenges.
  • Influence engineering strategy, governance, technical direction, and a culture of operational resilience.

Requirements

  • Significant hands-on experience applying SRE principles and practices in real-world environments.
  • Strong software engineering skills, particularly in release automation and toil reduction; Python experience is preferred.
  • Extensive platform engineering experience across CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, alerting, backup, and recovery.
  • Experience with at least one major public cloud, preferably AWS, and an understanding of system architecture and resilience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop people, coordinate shared outcomes, and communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work remotely and attend in person when required under the blended working model.

Nice to have

  • Healthcare or bioinformatics experience.
  • Experience working in regulated environments.
