Member of Technical Staff – Large Scale Reinforcement Learning (AI)

Location: Mountain View, United States. Employees living within 50 miles of a designated U.S. Microsoft office are expected to work from the office at least four days per week.

Salary: USD $119,800–$234,700 per year for Software Engineering IC4; USD $142,800–$274,800 per year for Software Engineering IC5. San Francisco Bay Area and New York City ranges may reach USD $304,200 per year.

What you will do

• Develop data collection, evaluation, and reinforcement learning methods for large language models.
• Curate high-quality reinforcement learning environments and training data.
• Build evaluations for core model capabilities and real-world performance.
• Apply advanced reinforcement learning techniques to improve model training recipes.
• Design hypotheses and experiment plans to iterate rapidly on model performance.
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
• At least 4 years of technical engineering experience with coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, or similar languages.
• Experience with reinforcement learning for large language models.
• Ability to work from the designated Microsoft office at least four days per week when located within the applicable distance.
• Strong written and verbal communication, collaboration, attention to detail, and end-to-end ownership.

Nice to have

• Six or more years of technical engineering experience, or a master's degree with four or more years of experience.
• Experience with large-scale AI and agentic AI deployment.
• Interest in emerging AI technologies and industry trends.
