Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Fraud Detection)

Location: US remote eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required by agreement with the manager.

What you will do

• Design, build, and productionize end-to-end machine learning pipelines for batch and real-time use cases.
• Develop models and detection tools for account takeover, fake accounts, payment fraud, bot activity, and other emerging fraud patterns.
• Train, evaluate, deploy, and operate machine learning models at scale.
• Work with large-scale structured and unstructured data to improve product, business, and operational models.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, software engineers, fraud intelligence, trust defense, platform, and operations teams.
• Write and review clean, testable code and contribute to design discussions, code reviews, and cross-team engineering practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of industry experience in applied machine learning, including building and productionizing models at scale.
• Strong Python programming skills; familiarity with Scala, Java, or an equivalent language.
• Knowledge of machine learning best practices, including feature engineering, model selection, A/B testing, and training/serving skew minimization.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or equivalent machine learning frameworks and with end-to-end data engineering pipelines.
• Understanding of large-scale software architecture, APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms, test-driven development, and deployment practices.
• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience in trust and risk areas such as fraud detection, anomaly detection, identity, or account integrity.
• Experience with gradient boosted trees, neural networks, transformers, and deep learning.
