TL;DR
Research Fellow - Soil Microbial Ecology (Molecular Microbiology/Soil Science): Investigating soil microbial communities, biogeochemical processes, and ecosystem health using DNA/RNA assays, genomic datasets, and spectral technology with an accent on soil biodiversity, microbial functionality, and environmental resilience. Focus on designing metagenomics, amplicon sequencing, qPCR, and transcriptomics studies, linking molecular signatures to ecological processes, and developing practical soil health management practices.

Location: Primarily based at hirify.global Brisbane South (Nathan), Australia, with work across other campuses as required. On-campus and work-from-home options are available.

Salary: AUD 91,705.29–107,420.93 for Research Fellow Grade 1 or AUD 117,076.11–139,031.71 for Grade 2, plus 17% superannuation.

What you will do

  • Conduct research on soil and environmental biodiversity, ecosystem functionality, resilience, and biogeochemical processes.
  • Design and perform DNA/RNA-based assays, including metagenomics, amplicon sequencing, qPCR, and transcriptomics.
  • Analyse genomic datasets, interpret microbial community structures, and connect molecular signatures with ecological processes.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals, contribute to grants and project reports, and present findings at conferences.
  • Supervise and mentor research students and assistants.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers and external stakeholders to develop research methodologies and management practices.

Requirements

  • PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, Soil Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Practical experience with DNA/RNA-based assays for soil microbial communities and genomic dataset analysis.
  • Strong publication record in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and experience presenting at national and international conferences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing competing deadlines and communicating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Unrestricted working rights in Australia are required; visa sponsorship is not available.
