TL;DR
Research Intern, AI for Science (AI): Developing machine learning methods for HDD design optimization, scientific materials discovery, and storage systems with an accent on physics-based simulation, surrogate modeling, and physics-informed models. Focus on building AI/ML prototypes, applying reinforcement learning and optimization techniques, and improving data-flow efficiency across storage architectures and filesystems.
Location: Shugart, Singapore. The role is onsite at ’s research and design center; no travel is required.

What you will do
- Develop AI and machine learning methods combining physics-based simulation, surrogate modeling, inverse design, and multi-objective optimization for advanced HDD technologies.
- Apply machine learning to photonic structures, near-field transducers, magnetic readers, lithography, and manufacturing-process optimization.
- Build atomistic-scale surrogates and physics-informed models for nanoscale materials discovery and property prediction.
- Improve data-flow efficiency, storage architectures, and filesystems across user and kernel space.
- Support senior engineers on research projects and contribute according to academic background, skills, and interests.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong foundation in linear algebra, statistics, optimization, and calculus.
- Understanding of machine learning and deep learning, including supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, R, and C/C++ or Java.
- Ability to commit to a full-time semester internship from January to May or August.
- Experience with reinforcement learning, genetic algorithms, computer vision, or natural language processing is relevant.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with generative AI, transformers, GPT, GANs, autoencoders, diffusion models, agentic AI workflows, or physics-informed neural networks.
- Experience applying Q-learning or genetic algorithms to real-world problems.
