Principal Software Engineer - Models (React/TypeScript)

Location: San Francisco, CA; Bellevue, WA; Sunnyvale, CA; New York, NY; Livingston, NJ

Base salary: $227,000–$303,000 per year, plus discretionary bonus, equity awards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own the architecture, performance, and stability of the W&B Models frontend.
• Set performance targets and validate improvements using production data.
• Define application delivery and rendering architecture, including efficient code delivery.
• Partner with backend and platform teams on API design and moving work out of the client.
• Lead broader frontend and architectural overhauls when incremental improvements are insufficient.
• Coordinate requirements and execution across engineering teams and organizational boundaries.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building user-facing software, with deep expertise in frontend architecture and performance.
• Experience leading the transformation of a large, long-lived React application and owning the outcome.
• Strong React and TypeScript skills, with production GraphQL experience and knowledge of Redux or Zustand.
• Experience instrumenting applications, analyzing frontend and backend traces, and proving performance improvements with metrics.
• Knowledge of client-side caching, bundlers, build tooling, code splitting, and delivery tradeoffs.
• Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements for access to controlled information.

Nice to have

• Experience with automated enforcement such as lint rules, CI gates, or performance budgets.
• Background in data-dense or visualization-heavy applications.
• Familiarity with Datadog RUM, APM, or comparable observability tooling.
• Working knowledge of Go or a similar backend language.
• Exposure to ML, MLOps, AI agent workflows, or highly configurable products.
