Confluent Principal Engineer I - Stream Governance

Location: Remote within the United States; locations include Poughkeepsie, Lowell, Rochester, Tucson, Research Triangle Park, Armonk, Boston, Bellevue, Atlanta, San Jose, Dallas, Austin, San Francisco, and Seattle. Some travel may be required based on business demand.

Salary: $192,000–$358,000 per year.

What you will do

• Define company-level technical strategy for stream governance, schema, and metadata infrastructure.
• Architect high-performance metadata management systems with low-latency lookups and strong consistency.
• Design data protection capabilities including encryption, access control, and schema validation.
• Build highly available, multi-tenant governance infrastructure optimized for scalability, reliability, and resilience.
• Establish architectural standards and influence product and engineering strategy across teams.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers, contribute to open-source projects, and represent the organization through technical thought leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
• Proven experience leading the architecture and delivery of large-scale distributed systems with company-level impact.
• Deep knowledge of fault tolerance, consistency, scalability, and cloud-native platforms.
• Experience with streaming or event-driven architectures and related schema, metadata, catalog, or governance systems.
• Ability to influence executives and stakeholders, work through ambiguity, and turn technical vision into shipped outcomes.
• Applicants must be based in the United States because the role's listed locations are in the United States.

Nice to have

• Industry recognition through open-source contributions or initiatives built from the ground up.
• Experience with large-scale data infrastructure, data catalogs, metadata, or governance ecosystems.
• Deep experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP and resource management in complex multi-tenant environments.
• Experience building infrastructure for AI or agentic workloads.
