TL;DR
Lead Vehicle Reliability Technician (Autonomous Vehicles): Supporting and scaling troubleshooting for Aurora’s autonomous truck fleet with an accent on real-time hardware and software diagnostics, internal tooling, and operational documentation. Focus on resolving safety-critical fleet issues, building automation and support systems, and mentoring technical staff in a hybrid environment.
Location: Hybrid role based in Pittsburgh, PA or Mountain View, CA, with at least 3 days per week in an office.
Salary: $41.75–$66.75 per hour in Pittsburgh, PA; $46.25–$74.25 per hour in Mountain View, CA.

What you will do
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex hardware and software issues affecting the autonomous vehicle fleet.
- Partner with onboard, platform, and cloud engineering teams to troubleshoot incidents and identify root causes.
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain internal tools and services that scale fleet troubleshooting.
- Own troubleshooting SOPs, runbooks, knowledge bases, and structured operational documentation.
- Identify recurring workflow gaps and implement tooling or process improvements.
- Mentor VRE engineers and technicians while setting standards for troubleshooting and software quality.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience troubleshooting complex hardware and software systems in live production or field-support environments.
- 2+ years of software development experience with Python, Go, TypeScript, or C++, including end-to-end ownership of internal tools or services.
- 5+ years administering and troubleshooting Linux systems in a support capacity.
- Experience mentoring or developing less experienced technical staff.
- Strong technical writing skills, including SOPs, runbooks, design documents, or similar materials.
- Ability to make independent engineering and operational decisions under time pressure in a safety-critical environment and communicate incident summaries clearly.
Nice to have
- Automotive or autonomous vehicle experience, including lidar, radar, or camera sensor systems.
- Experience with monorepo or Bazel-based build systems, gRPC services, or cloud-native architectures.
- Familiarity with ITIL or other formal service-management frameworks.
- Strong computer networking background.
