TL;DR
HITL Software Engineer (Hardware-in-the-Loop) (Python/Linux, aerospace): Designing, operating, and maintaining hardware-in-the-loop avionics test systems and automation tools for rocket production and launch operations with an accent on test-system architecture, simulation platforms, and spacecraft hardware integration. Focus on analysing test data, troubleshooting anomalies, and creating rigorous technical documentation for complex launch-vehicle systems.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand; onsite work supporting the New Zealand HITL team

What you will do
- Design, operate, and maintain avionics hardware-in-the-loop test systems supporting production and launch operations.
- Develop automation tools to optimize HITL operations and improve standardization.
- Work with engineering teams to verify the functionality and performance of avionics components.
- Operate launch-vehicle simulation platforms during day-of-launch activities.
- Analyse raw test data, determine pass/fail criteria, and troubleshoot anomaly root causes.
- Create and maintain system diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, procedures, and test and anomaly reports.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.
- At least 4 years of relevant engineering experience, including 2 or more years developing in Python on Linux.
- Experience designing automation solutions and working in hardware-in-the-loop environments.
- Understanding of sensors, signal conditioning, and data-acquisition electronics.
- Ability to manage projects and deliver on time, within cost, and to the required quality standard.
- For the New Zealand role, nationality and background checks are required for access to ITAR-regulated equipment and data; eligibility may depend on citizenship and dual-nationality status.
Nice to have
- Experience with C++, CI/CD, Git, networking, PLCs, relays, power systems, and spacecraft or similarly complex autonomous systems.
- Familiarity with Ethernet, RS485/422/232, CAN, LVDS, and SpaceWire protocols.
- Experience with harness manufacturing, electrical connectors, crimping, soldering, and engineering drawings.
- Technical troubleshooting, mentoring, quality reporting, and documentation experience.
