Senior Back-End Engineer (PHP, E-commerce)

Location: Fully remote in Estonia, Poland, Romania, Spain, or Ukraine; optional office work is available in Riga, Latvia.

What you will do

• Build, ship, optimize, and maintain scalable back-end systems for tax calculations, VAT processing, invoicing, and audit readiness.
• Collaborate with product managers, accounting, finance stakeholders, and other business partners.
• Design and execute initiatives while prioritizing bug fixes and platform improvements.
• Contribute to code reviews, refactoring, testing, pair programming, and continuous integration and deployment.
• Improve application performance, reliability, and data accuracy across transactional workflows.
• Share knowledge through weekly sessions and contribute to engineering best practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of back-end development experience with proficiency in PHP or Node.js and willingness to learn the other.
• Strong knowledge of high-load architecture, distributed systems, Domain-Driven Design, and CQRS.
• Experience with SOLID, Test-Driven Development, CI/CD, Agile, debugging, unit testing, and performance optimization.
• Good spoken and written English.
• Experience with PHP technologies such as Symfony, Laravel, Yii2, Doctrine, PHPUnit, and static code analysis tools.
• Product-minded approach, ownership, and ability to prioritize based on business impact.

Nice to have

• Practical experience using Claude, LLMs, or coding assistants for implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and code quality.
