TL;DR
Senior Mechanisms Manufacturing Engineer (Aerospace): Developing and scaling manufacturing processes, tooling, and production flows for spacecraft mechanisms including rotational actuators, separation mechanisms, gimbals, and reaction wheel assemblies with an accent on DFX, prototyping, qualification testing, and high-rate production. Focus on implementing advanced manufacturing techniques on flight hardware, optimizing subassembly build flows, and solving complex manufacturability and assembly challenges for high-power satellites.

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States. The role involves access to ITAR-controlled information and requires a U.S. Person or eligibility for a federally issued export control license.

Salary: $140,000–$170,000 per year plus equity.

What you will do

  • Provide DFX guidance for mechanisms, machined components, assemblies, tooling, flight hardware, and initial designs.
  • Develop innovative manufacturing systems and techniques for rotational actuators, separation mechanisms, gimbals, and reaction wheel assemblies.
  • Create custom manufacturing tools, processes, and Manufacturing Execution System software foundations.
  • Build prototypes and test articles, support development and qualification campaigns, and iterate hardware and processes based on test results.
  • Define efficient subassembly build flows that align satellite production with takt times and scale processes to high-rate production.
  • Mentor junior manufacturing engineers and technicians while leading research into novel spacecraft manufacturing technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in a high-volume, rapid-production manufacturing, integration, or design engineering environment.
  • Experience leading product development or process improvement initiatives and setting up production floors for first-article builds.
  • Deep knowledge of mechanisms subassembly manufacturing, DFX principles, GD&T, mechanical assembly drawings, and design review.
  • Familiarity with NASA-STD-5017, AIAA S-114, SMC-S-016, and GSFC-STD-7000 standards.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.

Nice to have

  • Experience with precision bearing standards, bearing preload, mechanisms tooling, wire harness manufacturing, and aerospace quality practices.
  • Experience developing production processes from the ground up and improving designs for manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of technician workflows, build tooling, CAD software such as NX, and MES systems.
