Senior Principal Machine Learning Systems Engineer (Search Platform)

Salary: United States base pay ranges are $272,700–$356,025 for Zone A, $245,430–$320,423 for Zone B, and $226,341–$295,501 for Zone C, plus potential benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

What you will do

• Set the long-term technical direction and roadmap for Search Serving, online retrieval, index serving, query processing, and ML inference.
• Design and build agentic search systems with strong performance, reliability, scalability, operability, and cost efficiency.
• Improve search quality through information retrieval, machine learning, evaluation, experimentation, and incremental production adoption.
• Advance inference for embedding, retrieval, and ranking models through batching, quantization, distillation, compilation, and hardware-aware optimization.
• Establish ML production practices for offline and online evaluation, observability, safe rollout and rollback, regression detection, and incident response.
• Lead cross-team initiatives, simplify fragmented systems, mentor senior engineers, and align technical and product leaders.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience designing and operating large-scale, low-latency search, recommendation, advertising, or retrieval systems.
• Deep experience with production inference, model optimization, retrieval and ranking pipelines, evaluation, experimentation, and operations.
• Strong distributed-systems expertise in performance, concurrency, availability, multi-tenancy, capacity planning, observability, and cost efficiency.
• Strong information-retrieval and applied-ML foundations across lexical, semantic, vector, or hybrid retrieval.
• Experience setting cross-organization technical direction and delivering initiatives across multiple teams and senior technical leaders.
• Strong product and technical judgment in framing problems, testing hypotheses, comparing alternatives, and managing investment complexity.
