R&D PhD Summer Intern: Data Science and Machine Learning

Location: Mason Business Center, United States; in-person five days a week

What you will do

• Review research on full-body motion reconstruction from wearable sensors and inform modeling and sensor design decisions.
• Determine optimal sensor types, quantities, and placements for motion reconstruction tasks.
• Design, build, and refine deep learning models that convert IMU and EMG signals into full-body motion.
• Evaluate models on public and internal datasets, analyzing assumptions, failure modes, and limitations.
• Build a production-ready application for uploading recordings, running inference, and visualizing results.
• Collaborate with R&D, Brand, and Product Development teams to translate research prototypes into tools and findings for design, ergonomics, fit, and comfort.

Requirements

• Working toward a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related field focused on machine learning, wearable sensing, or human motion analysis.
• Research experience with time-series machine learning, human activity recognition, wearable sensing, human pose estimation, or multi-modal sensor fusion.
• Strong Python programming skills and hands-on experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Available for a 12-week internship from May or early June through August 2027.
• Must work in person at the Mason Business Center five days per week.
• Immigration sponsorship is not available for this role.

Nice to have

• Research publications in venues such as NeurIPS, CVPR, SIGGRAPH, CHI, UbiComp/IMWUT, AAAI, or similar.
• Hands-on experience with IMU, EMG, or other wearable sensors.
• Knowledge of biomechanics, inverse kinematics, or human body models such as SMPL.
• Experience deploying machine learning models to production or building research tools and APIs.
