Senior Software Engineer (Observability)

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; flexible work from the office, home, or a combination of both. Offices and co-working spaces are available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

What you will do

• Design, build, and continuously improve observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used by Canva engineers.
• Optimize metrics and continuous profiling platforms, including their querying, visualization, monitoring, and operational reliability.
• Develop scalable data pipelines and infrastructure for metrics, profiling, and standardized alerting.
• Make pragmatic architecture and design decisions and provide technical leadership.
• Champion observability best practices and guide engineers across the organization.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to improve the use of metrics, profiling, and insights platforms.

Requirements

• Proficiency coding in Python, Golang, and/or Java.
• Strong knowledge of computer engineering fundamentals and first principles.
• Professional experience with infrastructure as code, including Terraform, Jsonnet, or equivalent tools.
• Practical experience with AWS services such as EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, and MSK, or equivalent technologies.
• Experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience with highly reliable, highly available, high-throughput distributed data pipelines and scalable databases.

Nice to have

• Deep OpenTelemetry experience.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale metrics and monitoring infrastructure, including distributed Prometheus clusters or equivalent databases.
• Experience with Kinesis, Kafka, Kubernetes stateful workloads, data security, data obfuscation, and alerting or SLA/SLO practices.
