Senior System Safety Engineer (Defense)

Location: Torrance, California, or Rio Rancho, New Mexico; onsite support for ground, live-fire, and flight test operations.

What you will do

• Define, implement, and continuously improve a tailored, risk-informed System Safety Program aligned with MIL-STD-882E.
• Identify, analyze, and mitigate hazards across weapon systems and supporting infrastructure using FHA, PHA, SHA, SSHA, SRHA, FTA, and software safety analysis.
• Define safety requirements and maintain traceability from hazard identification through mitigation, verification, and closure.
• Provide embedded safety support for system design trades, test planning, operational procedures, and hardware and software use.
• Represent system safety at working groups, integrated product teams, design reviews, test readiness reviews, safety boards, and customer technical reviews.
• Support ground, live-fire, and flight tests, and develop technically rigorous safety cases and Safety Assessment Reports for leadership and government stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or software with 8+ years of relevant or safety-related experience, or a master’s degree with 5+ years of experience.
• Demonstrated experience applying MIL-STD-882E in a tailored, risk-informed manner.
• Experience performing system and software safety analyses for weapon systems or aerospace platforms.
• Experience supporting the design, development, integration, test, and verification of military systems.
• Ability to independently assess, quantify, and communicate technical safety risk, including to senior technical leaders and government stakeholders.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance; access to classified or export-controlled information may require U.S. government authorization and additional eligibility conditions.

Nice to have

• Experience with missile systems, hypersonic weapons, advanced strike systems, flight test safety, live-fire safety, embedded software, or autonomy-enabled systems.
• Active Top Secret clearance and experience presenting safety cases to high-level safety review boards.
• Understanding of DoD acquisition, certification, and operational safety environments.
• Experience in rapid-development and prototype-driven organizations.
