Applied AI Research Engineer

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; staff are expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time. Occasional travel to customer sites is required.

Annual salary: $300,000–$400,000 USD

What you will do

• Embed with product teams and become a technical expert on new AI products and capabilities.
• Lead early model testing, field-readiness assessments, and capability education throughout the model lifecycle.
• Build demos, evaluations, and prototypes that demonstrate customer-relevant model capabilities and define performance standards.
• Create playbooks, training sessions, and reference architectures with Technical Enablement.
• Work hands-on with strategic customers to solve novel technical challenges and package solutions for broader field adoption.
• Synthesize customer insights, adoption patterns, blockers, and capability gaps to inform Product, Engineering, and Research roadmaps.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, Technical Product Manager, Forward Deployed Engineer, AI startup founder, or in a similar technical role.
• Strong technical aptitude and proficiency in at least one programming language.
• Meaningful experience building with large language models, including shipping LLM-powered products, developing agents or workflows, or integrating models into production systems.
• Experience designing evaluations, building prototypes, or developing technical enablement for complex products.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex topics to diverse stakeholders and executives.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or experience in a relevant field.
