Research Counsel (AI)

Location: San Francisco or New York City preferred, with at least 3 days per week in the office preferred; all staff are expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time. Other locations may be considered for the right candidate.

Annual salary: $265,000–$335,000 USD

What you will do

• Advise research and data teams on data sourcing, licensing, partnerships, and data-use strategy.
• Support regulatory readiness, model launches, system-card reviews, regulatory inquiries, and pre-release model decisions.
• Advise on responsible scaling for biological and chemical risks, capability evaluations, tiered research access, and dual-use questions.
• Counsel research groups on study design, data collection and sharing, external collaborations, publications, and program launches.
• Monitor global AI, privacy, copyright, and export-control developments and convert them into practical guidance.
• Engage with academics, regulators, industry groups, and civil society on responsible AI and data governance.

Requirements

• Law degree such as JD, LLB, or equivalent, with local licensing eligibility to work as in-house counsel in California or New York preferred.
• Strong legal judgment, analytical ability, communication skills, and technical fluency in fast-changing AI research environments.
• Experience or familiarity with the EU AI Act, U.S. AI legislation and frameworks, GDPR, CCPA, and comparable global regimes.
• Ability to advise on ambiguous, high-stakes legal questions and translate technical and legal analysis into actionable guidance.
• At least 8 years of legal experience advising technology companies is preferred, particularly across copyright, privacy, data, AI regulation, product, or policy matters.
• Minimum education is a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; a law degree is required for the counsel role.

Nice to have

• In-house experience or work with AI/ML products and services.
• Experience with regulators, standards bodies, academic or industry research, publications, open-source, or data licensing.
• Technical literacy covering model training, evaluation, and deployment.
• Experience with biosecurity, dual-use research, export controls, safety frameworks, human-subjects research, or consent.
