Contract Principal Software Engineer (Java Spring)

Location: Atlanta, GA, with a People Before Place Hybrid model; minimal travel required. Employment visa sponsorship is not available, and existing employment visas must remain valid for at least three years from the application date.

What you will do

• Design and implement Java Spring loyalty engine services for transaction processing, tier calculation, reward accrual, and benefit eligibility.
• Build resilient RESTful APIs using contract-first development, aggregation, caching, circuit breaking, graceful degradation, and API versioning.
• Establish service architecture, domain models, event-driven state management, auditability, and backward-compatible integration contracts.
• Integrate POS, CRM, commerce, identity, BFF, analytics, and finance platforms while applying normalization, retries, idempotency, and consistent earning logic.
• Implement secure authentication, session management, role-based access, 2FA redemption flows, observability, and full audit trails.
• Lead projects, influence roadmaps, simplify complex problems, improve organizational practices, and mentor engineers and leaders.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software development experience with a strong emphasis on backend development.
• Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, and Spring Data.
• Experience with domain-driven design, REST and OpenAPI, event-driven systems, message brokers, integration patterns, and configurable business rules.
• Strong relational database skills, including schema design, query optimization, and transactional integrity.
• Experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, observability, and automated unit, integration, contract, and scenario testing.
• Trusted consulting experience with stakeholders and cross-functional teams; degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with loyalty, rewards, financial calculation, fintech, payments, or audit-critical systems.
• Experience with BFF or API aggregation layers, mobile teams, POS integrations, Salesforce, Commerce Cloud, or identity integrations.
• Experience modeling complex account hierarchies, feature flagging, and progressive rollouts.
