Lead Embedded Firmware Engineer (IoT)

Location: Must be based in or able to commute to San Francisco, CA (Onsite 3 days per week)

Compensation: $147,000 – $200,000 + Equity

What you will do

• Design and implement efficient FreeRTOS firmware in C and C++ for hardware products like Spotter and Smart Mooring.
• Lead firmware development efforts, breaking down complex tasks into parallelizable work streams.
• Develop host-side test, analysis, and automation tools using Python.
• Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate, test, and debug complex systems.
• Write clear specifications and documentation for both internal and external users.
• Execute frequent firmware releases for proprietary and open-source Bristlemouth projects.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional embedded firmware/software experience.
• Prior experience as a tech lead for a firmware team.
• Fluency in embedded C and C++.
• Proficiency in Python and FreeRTOS.
• Strong understanding of software architecture principles and hardware peripherals.
• Ability to work onsite at the San Francisco office at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with radio telemetry and IPv6 networking.
• Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M0, M4, and M33 cores.
• Background in IoT, robotics, drones, or automotive products.
• Passion for ocean conservation.
