TL;DR
[Legal] Director, Country Lawyer, Japan, Korea [Orthopaedics] (Healthcare Legal & Compliance): Providing strategic legal counsel for DePuy Synthes operations in Japan and South Korea with an accent on regulated healthcare businesses, commercial agreements, compliance, and risk management. Focus on advising senior leaders, managing complex disputes and investigations, negotiating distributor and supplier contracts, and supporting transactions and business separation activities.

Location: Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan; hybrid work format. Up to approximately 20% domestic and international travel.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech develops healthcare and medical device solutions, with the Orthopaedics business planned to operate as the standalone DePuy Synthes company after the anticipated 2027 separation.

What you will do

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for DePuy Synthes businesses in Japan and South Korea across commercial, medical, and operational activities.
  • Provide strategic counsel on regulatory, compliance, corporate governance, commercial contracting, and disputes.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate complex distributor, supplier, and strategic partnership agreements.
  • Support investigations, litigation, government inquiries, organizational changes, transactions, and business separation activities.
  • Advise senior leadership on risk mitigation while balancing legal risks with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with regional and global legal, privacy, and healthcare compliance teams on policies and best practices.

Requirements

  • Law degree such as LLB, JD, or equivalent.
  • Professional qualifications and certifications to practice law in Japan.
  • 10+ years of progressive legal experience, including work with regulated industries.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial, regulatory, and compliance law relevant to medical devices or healthcare.
  • Experience advising senior business leaders, managing external counsel, and handling complex legal matters.
  • Fluency in Japanese and business-level English required.

Nice to have

  • Experience in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences.
  • Multi-country or regional legal experience, including exposure to South Korean legal issues.
  • Experience with corporate transactions, restructurings, or business separations.
  • Leadership experience mentoring or guiding legal professionals.
  • Additional fluency in South Korean.
